Course Introduction
Welcome — we’re truly glad you’re here. This wellness course was created for physicians and surgeons who work under extraordinary stress. Written and produced by Dr. Tim Riegel, MD, FRCSC and Nancy Riegel, Harvard Healthcare Economics Certificate & Certified Executive Coach, it comes from both professional experience and our own lived journey through illness, burnout, financial strain, loss, and recovery. We understand what it means to keep showing up for patients — and for the people you love — even when you feel overwhelmed inside.
At its core, this course is about your health: your body, nervous system, sleep, stress response, and overall well-being. Caring for your body isn’t optional — it is essential to sustaining a long and meaningful career in medicine. When trauma, pressure, and responsibility are constant, your health becomes the anchor that keeps you grounded. Our hope is that this program becomes a place of renewal, where you feel supported in caring for the most important patient of all — yourself.
Dr. Tim Riegel, MD, FRCSC is a board-certified surgeon with decades of experience in high-acuity environments. He brings compassionate insight into the realities physicians face, along with his own journey of stress-related illness and recovery, helping clinicians protect their health and sustain purpose-driven careers.
Nancy Riegel is a three-time author, speaker, and executive coach with over 30 years of experience supporting senior leaders across multiple sectors, including healthcare. She specializes in simplifying complex systems through thoughtful, science-based approaches that support meaningful and sustainable change.

In this first module, we’ll explore why your health is the foundation of everything you do — not only as a clinician, but as a human being. We’ll look honestly at the ways stress, trauma exposure, relentless responsibility, and chronic pressure affect the body, nervous system, sleep, decision-making, and relationships. Most physicians are trained to push through exhaustion and keep going — often long after their body has been asking for help. This module invites you to pause and reconnect with what your health truly means to you, so you can begin rebuilding from a place of awareness, compassion, and strength.
